Step-by-Step Manual Calculation
Step 1: Create a Table
Write down each course, its credits, its grade, and leave a column for quality points.
Step 2: Convert Notes to Points
Use the table above to find the numeric value for each letter grade.
Step 3: Calculate Quality Points
For each row, multiply: Crédits × Points = Quality Points.
Step 4: Sum the Columns
Add up all quality points. Add up all credits.
Step 5: Divide
GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Crédits Totaux. Round to two decimal places.
Worked Example
| Course | Crédits | Note | Points | Quality Pts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Math | 3 | B+ (3.3) | 3.3 | 9.9 |
| Science | 4 | A (4.0) | 4.0 | 16.0 |
| English | 3 | B (3.0) | 3.0 | 9.0 |
| PE | 1 | A (4.0) | 4.0 | 4.0 |
Sum of Quality Points: 9.9 + 16.0 + 9.0 + 4.0 = 38.9
Sum of Crédits: 3 + 4 + 3 + 1 = 11
GPA = 38.9 ÷ 11 = 3.54
Quick Estimation Trick
For a rough estimate: if most of your courses are B-range (3.0), and you have a few A's, your GPA will be somewhere between 3.0 and 3.5. Each A in a 3-credit course adds about 0.06–0.10 to your GPA above the B baseline (depending on total credits).
