High School GPA Basics

Your high school GPA is one of the most important factors in college admissions. It represents your overall academic performance across all four years of high school. Understanding how GPA works—and how to improve it—gives you a strategic advantage in the application process.

Unweighted vs Weighted in High School

Most high schools track two types of GPA:

  • Unweighted (4.0 scale): All classes treated equally. An A in any class = 4.0.
  • Weighted (5.0 scale): AP, IB, and honors classes get bonus points. An A in AP = 5.0.

How High School GPA is Calculated

The formula is the same as college GPA:

  1. Convert each letter grade to grade points
  2. Multiply by the course's credit value (usually 0.5 per semester or 1.0 per year)
  3. Sum all quality points and divide by total credits

Example: Sophomore Year GPA

CourseCréditosCalificaciónQuality Pts
Algebra II1B+ (3.3)3.3
English II1A (4.0)4.0
AP World History1A- (3.7)3.7
Biology1A (4.0)4.0
Spanish II1B (3.0)3.0
Art1A (4.0)4.0

Unweighted GPA = 22.0 ÷ 6 = 3.67
